Svartvik & R. Quirk(eds.) A Corpus of English Conver- sation, Lund Studies in English 56, Lund: Gleerups/Liber, 1980) are intended to represent spontaneous conversation among educated British speakers. The speakers are British (with one exception in S.2.5) and educated to university level. The recordings were made without the prior knowledge of the main participants, and to prevent the possibility of identification, the names used in the transcriptions are fictitious but prosodically equivalent to the originals. In cases where one or more participants had knowledge of the recording (and had the task of keeping the conversation going), such non-surreptitious speakers have been specially designated by lower case letters (eg a,b). Their con- tributions to the conversation have not been included in the total 5,000 words of each text, nor have their utterances, as a rule, been prosodically analysed. For the symbols used to describe speaker identities, see p 21 of the book. In view of the fact that the recordings were made surreptitiously, the audio tapes cannot be made available. Note on text categories S.4 - S.12 (available on magnetic computer tape or diskette) Words uttered by non-surreptitious speakers in categories 4-12 have been analysed and included in the word count of c. 5,000 words for each text, with the exception of S.7.1 where non-surreptitious speakers have not been analysed, nor have they been included in the word count. In S.9.2a one speaker is non-native and has not been analysed.
